Hawaii, the Pacific island U.S. state, is both the largest and most populous jurisdiction in the Pacific region, with 6,425 square miles and 1,244,898 people (est. 2002). The volcanic Hawaiian island chain, 2,400 miles from the U.S. West Coast, are the center of much trade, commerce, and industry for the Pacific as a whole. Hawaii's population is highly diverse; indigenous Pacific Islanders constitute only a minority of its residents. Honolulu is a major urban population center, but many Hawaiians also reside in rural and remote areas. The economy of Hawaii is based on tourism, the U.S. military, and agriculture. Information adapted from Pacific Resources for Education and Learning (PREL). |
