Flooding, Hail and Waterspout/Tornado March 9, 2012

A cold upper level low developed northwest of Kauai March 8. The upper low helped to reinvigorate a leftover surface boundary from a frontal passage a few days earlier. When the surface boundary passed over the islands from west to east...Kauai was hardest hit with rainfall totals on the north shore of Kauai in excess of 30 inches in a 4 day period (See rain totals).

Overnight on March 8, heavy rain fell over Kauai and east Maui. At 3:55 am HST, a Severe Thunderstorm Watch was issued for the Alenuihaha Channel and areas to the west, which included all the smaller islands of Hawaii. Thunderstorms quickly developed over the watch area, prompting Special Marine Waters for the storms over the Hawaiian Coastal Waters, and Severe Thunderstorm Warnings for the storms over the islands. This was in addition to the Flash Flood Warnings and Flood Advisories for flooding concerns over land. A Flash Flood Watch was also in effect, having been issued at 8:53 am HST on Thursday March 8.
