There are no coastal watches or warnings in effect.

Interests in the main Hawaiian islands should continue to monitor the progress of Hilda. A tropical storm watch may be required for the Big Island later today or tonight.

DISCUSSION AND 48-HOUR OUTLOOK

At 500 am HST, 1500 UTC, the center of hurricane Hilda was located near latitude 16.2 north, longitude 149.8 west. Hilda is moving toward the northwest near 9 mph, 15 km/h. A turn toward the northwest and a decrease in forward speed is expected over the next 48 hours, with Hilda forecast to be moving very slowly on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Maximum sustained winds are near 90 mph, 150 km/h, with higher gusts. Steady weakening is expected over the next 48 hours, with Hilda forecast to weaken to a tropical storm on Tuesday.

Hurricane force winds extend outward up to 25 miles, 35 km, from the center, and tropical storm force winds extend outward up to 70 miles, 110 km.

The estimated minimum central pressure is 979 mb, 28.91 inches.

Swells associated with hurricane Hilda will produce large and potentially life threatening surf along east and southeast facing shores of the main Hawaiian islands over the next couple of days.
