DISCUSSION AND 48-HOUR OUTLOOK

At 1100 pm HST, 0900 UTC, the center of hurricane Hilda was located near latitude 15.7 north, longitude 149.1 west. Hilda is moving toward the west-northwest near 9 mph, 15 km/h. A turn toward the northwest and a decrease in forward speed is expected over the next 48 hours, with Hilda forecast to be moving very slowly on Tuesday.

Maximum sustained winds are near 100 mph, 155 km/h, with higher gusts. Steady weakening is expected over the next 48 hours, with Hilda forecast to weaken to a tropical storm on Tuesday.

Hurricane force winds extend outward up to 25 miles, 35 km, from the center, and tropical storm force winds extend outward up to 70 miles, 110 km.

The estimated minimum central pressure is 974 mb, 28.77 inches.
