DISCUSSION AND 48-HOUR OUTLOOK

At 500 am HST, 1500 UTC, the center of hurricane Hilda was located near latitude 14.7 north, longitude 146.7 west. Hilda is moving toward the west-northwest near 13 mph, 20 km/h. Hilda is expected to gradually turn toward the northwest and slow in forward speed over the next couple of days.

Maximum sustained winds are near 115 mph, 185 km/h, with higher gusts. Hilda is a category three hurricane on the saffir-simpson hurricane wind scale. Gradual weakening is expected today, with more significant weakening forecast Monday and Tuesday.

Hurricane force winds extend outward up to 25 miles, 35 km, from the center, and tropical storm force winds extend outward up to 90 miles, 150 km.

The estimated minimum central pressure is 963 mb, 28.44 inches.

Swells associated with hurricane Hilda will produce large surf along east and southeast facing shores of the main Hawaiian islands over the next couple of days.
