DISCUSSION AND 48-HOUR OUTLOOK

At 1100 am HST, 2100 UTC, the center of hurricane Hilda was located near latitude 13.7 north, longitude 143.5 west. Hilda is moving toward the west near 15 mph, 24 km/h. A gradual turn toward the northwest is expected over the next couple of days with a slowing of forward speed.

Maximum sustained winds are near 140 mph, 220 km/h, with higher gusts. Hilda is a category four hurricane on the saffir-simpson hurricane wind scale. Some additional strengthening is still possible today, followed by weakening on Sunday and Monday.

Hurricane force winds extend outward up to 25 miles, 35 km, from the center, and tropical storm force winds extend outward up to 125 miles, 205 km.

The estimated minimum central pressure is 946 mb, 27.94 inches.
