DISCUSSION AND 48-HOUR OUTLOOK

At 800 am HST, 1800 UTC, the center of tropical storm Ana was located near latitude 23.2 north, longitude 167.5 west. Ana is moving toward the northwest near 10 mph, 17 km/h, and this motion is expected to gradually become northerly through early Friday.

Maximum sustained winds are near 40 mph, 65 km/h, with higher gusts. Some strengthening is forecast through early Friday.

Tropical storm force winds extend outward up to 125 miles, 205 km from the center.

The estimated minimum central pressure is 1005 mb, 29.68 inches.

HAZARDS AFFECTING LAND

WIND

Tropical storm conditions are expected over French Frigate Shoals, necker island and gardner pinnacles, and nearby waters today and tonight.

SURF

Large swells produced by Ana will build across the northwest Hawaiian islands today and tonight. Surf produced by these swells will be dangerous along the southern and southeastern facing reefs of the northwest Hawaiian islands.

RAINFALL

Rainfall amounts of 4 to 8 inches are possible over the northwest Hawaiian islands near the center of Ana.
