DISCUSSION AND 48-HOUR OUTLOOK

At 1100 am HST, 2100 UTC, the center of tropical storm Pewa was located near latitude 11.7 north, longitude 178.5 west. Pewa is moving toward the west-northwest near 13 mph, 20 km/h, and this motion is expected to continue for the next 48 hours.

Maximum sustained winds are near 65 mph, 100 km/h, with higher gusts. Some strengthening is forecast during the next 48 hours, and Pewa is expected to become a typhoon in the next day or two.

Tropical storm force winds extend outward up to 60 miles, 95 km from the center.

The estimated minimum central pressure is 1000 mb, 29.53 inches.
