- Kauai radar outage for dual polarization upgrade begins May 14

The South Kauai WSR-88D radar will undergo dual polarization upgrade starting May 14. The radar will be out of service until 5 pm May 27 while the upgrade work is performed.

- Lahaina Noon dates and times for 2012

In the tropics, the sun passes overhead twice during the year. On these two days, at local noon, the sun will be exactly overhead and an upright object such as a flagpole will have no shadow. The Bishop Museum maintains a list of dates and times for Lahaina Noon at various locations across Hawaii.<br />

The National Weather Service Office in Honolulu and the State Climate Extremes Committee has confirmed that a 4 and 1/4 inch hailstone collected in Hawaii on the morning of March 9th, 2012 is indeed the largest hailstone on record that has fallen in the state.

- NWR Outage Thursday to impact transmitters on Kauai and Oahu

Maintenance being performed at Mt. Kaala on Thursday, February 9 will result in NOAA Weather Radio outages for the transmitters on Kauai and Oahu.

February 5th is National Weatherman's Day which commemorates the birth of John Jeffries in 1744. Jeffries, one of America's first weather observers, began taking daily weather observations in Boston, MA in 1774 and he took the first balloon observation in 1784. This is a day to recognize the men and women who collectively provide Americans with the best weather, water and climate forecasts and warnings services of any nation.
